Super Help from H-E-B’s Souper Bowl of Caring

This week, H-E-B provided a $20,000 donation to the Food Bank representing a share of proceeds from its Souper Bowl of Caring activities in January and February.  The annual hunger awareness campaign tied to the festivities building up to the Super Bowl generates donations from H-E-B shoppers that the corporation translates into a significant contribution to support the work of food banks across the state of Texas. We are grateful for this generous support from H-E-B and its customers.  In the spirit of the Super Bowl, we applaud great team...

Stamp Out Hunger, May 9 – Coming to a Mail Box Near You!

The annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive held by the National Association of Letter Carriers is set for Saturday, May 9.  Just put a bag of non-perishable food near your mailbox that morning before your mail delivery and your mail carrier will be able to get the bag delivered to the Food Bank.  It’s that easy to turn an upcoming trip to the grocery store or your pantry into a food drive for the hungry! Thanks to the devoted mail carriers who help make this food drive possible.  They inspire us by not letting anything get in the way of our mail delivery and they remind us that...

Valero Shares with the Hungry

Valero’s Port Arthur location did a great job holding an employee food drive during National Volunteer Appreciation Week to celebrate the company’s outstanding volunteer service in the community.  On Friday, April 17, Valero loaded 3,220 pounds of food onto a Food Bank truck, enough to supply about 2,700 meals to hungry families in the area…and there’s still some more cash and food coming that will further the impact of that generosity. Thanks to the Valero team for once again rallying around an important community cause.  Your help for the hungry is...

Happy Volunteer Appreciation Week!

During National Volunteer Appreciation Week, we want to highlight the great impact our volunteers offer by their dedicated service. As an example of impact, last month, volunteers and work release inmates serving here sorted a total of 169,600 pounds of food and Family Box Day participants helped prepare more than 270,000 pounds of food for distribution.  That’s just in one month! Virtually every day volunteers are working side-by-side with staff.   In the 12 months from March 2014 to February 2015, inmates and volunteers contributed 8,639 hours of service.  When you factor in that...

Former Board Member Honored for His Shining Example

Today, we had the privilege of honoring a former board member Norris Hardy for his dedicated service to the Food Bank, particularly during its formative years. Professionally, Mr. Hardy operated a trucking service that supported the movement of mail, leading him to be instrumental in helping the local branches of the US Postal Service engage in the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive conducted b…y the National Association of Letter Carriers on the Saturday before Mother’s Day. Personally, Mr. Hardy invested plenty of sweat equity in the conversion of the Schott’s Bakery...

Kroger Shows Its Caring

Kroger staff from Houston and two of our local stores stopped by today to deliver the Souper Bowl of Caring funds collected by local stores around the time of the Super Bowl. Their check presentation of $3,955 put a smile on our faces! Now that check will help put food on tables all around Southeast Texas. Thanks for making a difference, Kroger!

Yoobi School Supply Packs are a Big Hit

We are grateful to have received packages of Yoobi products this fall for our School Tools program, thanks to Yoobi’s marketing promise of, “One for you.  One for me.”  That motto means that for every Yoobi school supply purchased at Target, another Yoobi product is donated to an elementary school classroom in need of supplies.  We are privileged to serve our community by distributing those donated products through our School Tools program to help needy children. Ms. Gilford’s class at Bingman Pre-K in Beaumont boosted the cuteness factor of our project by recently creating a...
