The Southeast Texas Food Bank would like to thank all of those in our community who donated to the 2013 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The National Association of Letter Carriers and local postal carriers worked diligently this past Saturday to collect over 50,000 pounds of food to place directly into the hands of those in need in Southeast Texas.

The drive kicked off Friday May 10, with an opening day event at The Walden Road USPS location. The tremendous volunteer efforts of the USPS letter carriers in Southeast Texas contributed to the collection, and would not have been possible without their time. More information is available at stampouthunger.info.

The Southeast Texas Food Bank’s 2013 Agency Conference was all about empowerment. Hosted at The Cathedral of Faith Baptist Church in Beaumont on April 9th, 2013, nearly 250 attendees were invited for a day of fellowship, workshops and door prizes.

The Southeast Texas Food Bank distributes over 4 million pounds a year to our community, but where does it go? Who distributes the food to those living in poverty?

“We distribute food to over 130 agencies all over Southeast Texas that put the food directly into the hands who need it in our area,” says Kristen Read, Public Relations Coordinator for The Southeast Texas Food Bank. “We would not be able to service 8 counties effectively without our area agencies; they are the feet on the streets.”

The agencies are in charge of handling all of the food, and making sure it is correctly distributed to those in need. The 365-day a year job is never done, and The Southeast Texas Food Bank takes one day a year to say thanks.

“Workshops were held throughout the day to help further educate our agencies, and equip them with the right tools to keep their ships tight and sailing smoothly.”

Workshops included cooking demonstrations, basic management skills, making a difference in your community and working to empower all those in need. More information about the Southeast Texas Food Bank’s area counties and agencies are available on our page at http://setxfoodbank.org/partner-agencies/

Hunger Study Overview

Feeding America, a non-profit organization, feeds America’s hungry through its network of approximately 200 food banks and engages the country in the fight to end hunger. Hunger in America 2014 will be Feeding America’s sixth extensive study of charitable food assistance. The methods used to collect the data are unlike any other hunger-focused study and capture detailed information about who is in need of emergency food assistance and their circumstances. This information provides an invaluable resource for charitable feeding organizations to help develop programs that best support people in need.

This study is also an important step toward SETX Food Bank’s goal of ending hunger in Southeast Texas by raising awareness of hunger in the community and providing detailed data on the local client population and charitable food services. For the first time ever, client survey data will be collected using touchscreen tablets and wireless technology. Volunteers are needed to conduct client data collection in the SETX Food Bank service area from April through August 2013.
Beaumont, April 4, 2013 – The Southeast Texas Food Bank is participating in the national Hunger in America 2014 study, an in-depth, quadrennial look at our clients, in an effort to find ways to better serve those in need in our community.

“We have all types of volunteer needs that we will be needing to fill from April to August of 2013.”

The Southeast Texas Food Bank, part of the Feeding America network, is participating in the study along with nearly 200 other food banks across the country. When completed, Hunger in America will be the largest study of charitable food assistance in the United States, providing comprehensive and statistically valid data on the charitable food distribution system and the people being served by the Feeding America network.

The last study, Hunger in America 2010, resulted in an extremely detailed report, drawing on data from more than 61,000 interviews with clients and surveys of 37,000 feeding agencies.
