Every day thousands of Southeast Texans experience hunger. They are friends of your friends and your neighbor’s brother who just needs a little help to get through some tough times. They come from proud, strong families who taught them to rely on each other but they struggle with getting help because our culture also has strong opinions about “hand-outs.” They are single mothers struggling to take care of their kids after their husband left, they are young families trying to make ends meet with minimum wage jobs, they are fathers who have worked hard all their lives but are finding it hard to pay the bills with only Social Security after a debilitating injury. Many of us are just a few paychecks away from the same struggles. Take a walk in their shoes and see if you can make a little income stretch impossibly beyond it’s value.
