The Southeast Texas Food Bank & the National Association of Letter Carriers hosted a press conference on Tuesday, May 8th at the Post Office on Walden Rd. in Beaumont. Representatives from the Food Bank, The National Association of Letter Carriers, local postal workers and a member agency of the Food Bank were in attendance. Local letter carriers began delivering paper grocery sacks with the food drive logo on them the week of May 7th. Postal customers used the bags to donate non-perishable food items and placed the bags at their mail receptacle for pickup by their letter carrier on Saturday, May 12th. The Southeast Texas Food Bank collected over 95,000 pounds of food! That is over 3 times our goal of last year. Thank you NALC and Southeast Texas for making this year’s food drive so successful!
The Stamp Out Hunger food drive, held on the second Saturday in May, has become the nation’s largest single-day food drive benefiting Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-reflief organizaiton. In 2011, generous Americans donated 70.2 million pounds of food.
