Q&A

SETXFB: How long have you been volunteering at the Southeast Texas Food Bank?

Hetty: I have been volunteering for the Southeast Texas Food Bank since July of 2013. I have always had a desire to serve and be of service to others. I passed the Food Bank many times and always wondered what went on behind those walls. In late June of 2013, I saw a post on Facebook requesting volunteers to stuff envelopes. I jumped at the chance to help and have never regretted my choice.

SETXFB: Can you tell us a little bit about the departments and projects you’ve worked with during that time?

Hetty: Three things that really made a strong impression on me while working at the Food Bank (1) how so very organized each department is, (2) how very clean each department is and that includes the warehouse and (3) how dedicated each employee is in making sure that their mission to “Lead the Fight Against Hunger in Southeast Texas” is carried out.

SETXFB: What is your favorite volunteering memory at the Southeast Texas Food Bank?

Hetty: While working at the Food Bank I have had the opportunity to work in several departments and learn what exactly the Food Bank does and how it operates. I have stuffed envelopes, laminated paper, stapled and filed, made gift bags, sorted non-food items, stocked shelves, and worked with Fallon Foster in School Tools. I am always willing and eager to help in anyway I can.

SETXFB: Why is it important for you to volunteer at the Southeast Texas Food Bank?

Hetty: I believe you have not truly given until you have given to someone that cannot pay you back. Jesus also said, “when you have done to the least of my servants, you have also done it unto me.” Matt. 25:40

SETXFB: Please tell us a little more about yourself.

Hetty: When I am not volunteering at the Food Bank I am involved with the jail ministry at my church. I am also a special education school teacher with the Hardin-Jefferson school district. I have been a teacher for 35 years. I have been married for 24 years to my husband, L.C. Brown. He is a Vietnam veteran and I am very proud of him and his service to his country. I have three step-kids and nine grandkids. I love gardening, cooking and crafts. I am also addicted to my IPAD.

SETXFB: What is your favorite kind of food?

Hetty: My favorite kinds of foods are MEXICAN, MEXICAN, and MEXICAN. Did I mention Mexican. I also like Chinese, Cajun and good old southern food. Actually, I never met a culture I did not like.

SETXFB: What advice would you give to those interested in volunteering?

Hetty: If any of you are interested in volunteering for the Southeast Texas Food Bank, my advice is JUST DO IT. You will find it to be very interesting and rewarding, and you’ll work around very dedicated people.

Did you know that a $10 donation can provide up to 30 meals for desperate people in your community? By making a donation, you are helping to ensure that hungry children in Southeast Texas are adequately nourished, that none of our senior citizens are forced to chose between medicine and food, and that every family facing a crisis can at least have the assurance of food on the table.

Your gift goes a long, long way!
